Just off the coast of northern Venezuela lies Isla de Margarita, dubbed the “pearl of the Caribbean.” Isla de Margarita is part of the three-island Nueva Esparta State of Venezuela; the other two islands are Coche and Cubagua. Isla de Margarita is important in Venezuelan history as it was the first free territory in Venezuela. Porlamar is the island’s largest city, the main commercial center with many shops and good restaurants. Playa El Agua is the most popular beach on the island, with numerous nearby bars, restaurants, and nightlife. Although sun and beach are the main reasons for visiting, there are several rewarding sights worth exploring, such as Santa Rosa Castle, Fort of Pampatar, the Cathedral Nuestra Señora de la Asunción, and the Basilica de la Virgen del Valle. Isla de Margarita is a tropical gem, home to excellent beaches, sunny moderate temperatures, and lush tropical trees and flowers that make this sun-kissed island a popular destination.
